In one world-class idiot Twitter posting Wednesday, a CNN anchor who’s also a lawyer proved to the world that elements of the mainstream media are utterly inept at reporting the news.
And one reply — “You, sir, are a moron” — was putting it charitably.
Chris Cuomo, who’s also the son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, replied Wednesday to a complaint that “too many people are saying that hate speech doesn’t equal free speech.” Cuomo tweeted:

Read the Constitution? The Constitution is silent on the issue of “hate speech,” as HotAir senior editor Ed Morrissey was only too happy to point out to the lawyer/journalist:

Not there? Hmm. Former CNN anchor Piers Morgan often used his anchor desk to claim that the Second Amendment only applied to muskets. Maybe the words “hate speech” is next to the word “muskets.” No?

It looked as though one Twitter user almost ran afoul of his 140 character limit before he ran out of adjectives to describe Cuomo’s assertion.

Although the First Amendment is silent on “hate speech,” the most recent case law on the issue makes it clear that even speech most of the populace finds totally reprehensible is indeed protected.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the hateful and outrageous Westboro Baptist Church’s military funeral demonstrations, where its members claim the death of our fallen soldiers is God’s punishment for homosexuality.
Writing for the majority in its 2011 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts said that the First Amendment protects “even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate,” according to The Huffington Post.
“Speech is powerful,” Roberts acknowledged. “It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and – as it did here – inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker.”
Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mr. Cuomo.
