Wallace to Dem. Maryland congresswoman: Have 50 years of Democrats failed Baltimore?

Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards denied that liberal policies are responsible for Baltimore’s violence, despite the city having liberal leaders for nearly 50 years.

Fox News host Chris Wallace grilled Edwards, a Democrat, about murder charges leveled against six Baltimore police officers and the city’s soaring violent crime rate on “Fox News Sunday.”

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced murder charges in a news conference Friday, saying “to the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America:  I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,’” which led critics to call the charges politically motivated.

Edwards said she thought Mosby “did an amazing job laying out the reasons for a probable cause finding,”  She added, “This is the beginning of the process, not the end of it.”

Responding to police union attorney Michael Davey’s allegation that the Mosby acted too quickly, Edwards told Wallace she believed one week was sufficient to examine the evidence.  “There’s not a requirement to go to a grand jury,” she said.

Wallace referred to a Baltimore Sun investigation which revealed more than $5.7 million in court judgments and settlements of the city’s police brutality claims.

Edwards said there’s an “over-policing that’s going on, not just in Baltimore, but across this country.”

“What does ‘over-policing’ mean?” Wallace asked.

“If you have communities where the only face of government that they see is law enforcement – it’s not investment in their schools, it’s not investment in their communities and economic development – it’s law enforcement,” Edwards said.

“And that’s not the fault of police, that’s the fault of policy makers who are making decisions about where our priorities are.”

Wallace pointed out that Baltimore has a violent crime rate four times higher than the national average, high unemployment and poor school performance, and that Baltimore “has not had a Republican mayor in 50 years.”

“Is it unfair to say that the liberal policies have failed the city of Baltimore?” he asked.

Edwards said “I think it’s unevenly spread,” explaining that Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake requested funds to be released from the Republican state government for schools.

“It’s not a matter of money,” Wallace remarked, “Baltimore spends the third highest amount per capita” on schools, and its schools are still last.

“I think we have a lot of questions to ask,” Edwards said, “they’re questions for Democrats and Republicans about where we’re going to make investments in our communities, so that the only investment that we make” isn’t just for law enforcement.

But the government has been “investing” in Baltimore and other Democrat-run cities since the 1960s. The return on that half-century of investment hasn’t been good — but liberals can’t admit it.
