President Obama’s State Department issued a statement Monday clearing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of any wrongdoing related to donations by foreign countries to the foundation she leads and her decisions in office.
At least none anybody can prove.
“We are not aware of any evidence that actions taken by Secretary Clinton were influenced by donations to the Clinton Foundation or speech or honoraria of former President Clinton,” a State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said, according to Bloomberg.
“We are aware of no evidence that there was undue influence,” Rathke said. (“Undue influence” is legal speak for bribery.)
Well, that’s heartening. The State Department can’t prove that it’s former Cabinet-member secretary was on the take from foreign governments – a question that hasn’t arisen for any other secretary of state yet.
So America must conclude that she wasn’t. Just as America would have had to conclude that her husband had never had sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky, had it not been for the unfortunate survival of a certain blue dress on the scene.
Unfortunately, the State Department’s purview doesn’t cover donations to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation that might have come from non-governmental sources, Bloomberg reported.
Fortunately, though, we do have Bill Clinton’s unimpeachable word of honor that there’s no evidence of bribery there either.
“I don’t want to get into the weeds here. I’m not responsible for anybody else’s perception,” Clinton told NBC on Monday. “I asked Hillary and she said that, ‘no one has ever tried to influence me by helping you.’
“No one has even suggested they have a shred of evidence about that.”
So, we have Hillary’s word to Bill that no one ever tried to influence her by bribing him, and we have Bill’s word to America that there isn’t a smidgen of evidence to prove it even if they did.
For some reason, the Republican National Committee is skeptical.
“If there wasn’t something to hide, Hillary Clinton wouldn’t have deleted tens of thousands of emails from her secret email server and the State Department wouldn’t be dragging its feet on virtually every public records request that comes their way,” RNC spokesman Michael Short said in a statement, according to ABC News.
Fortunately, there seem to be quite a few people with long memories on social media these days, who gave the State Department statement about as much credit as it deserves.

Anyone who remembers the late 1990s in Washington should be getting a very familiar feeling about all this: the Clintons claim an accusation is unfounded; Republicans say they don’t believe the Clintons; the media will make it look like Republicans are bananas.
Evidence will turn up showing the Clintons are as dirty as last week’s laundry.
Repeat the process.
And this is the couple the Democrats are dying to put back in the White House.
