A 10-year-old Georgia boy got the lesson of a lifetime when his mother enlisted the help of local police to crack down on his misbehavior.
Columbus mom Chiquita Hill, 33, knew she had to do something after son Sean’s fifth-grade teacher told her he was being ”rude and disrespectful, not listening, talking back, not doing his school work,” according to ABC News.
Afraid that his misconduct would escalate to disrespect for authority as an adult, Hill called the Columbus Police Department to scare the boy straight.
Though he didn’t take his mother’s threats seriously at first, Sean’s laughter soon turned to tears when officers arrived, handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a patrol car for five minutes.
The tactic may have worked. Once officers let Sean out of the car, he ran inside and gave his mother a hug.
“I don’t know what they said to him,” Hill told ABC News, adding that Sean told her, ”I’ll never do it again.”
Some may disagree with her methods, Hill said, but she was “trying to get a point across to my son — if you want to be disrespectful and you want to be rude, this is what happens when bad people do bad things. There are consequences for everything.”
Hill told ABC News she was happy with her decision.
”He will be 11 this month,” she said. “With all the things going on in Missouri and in Baltimore, I want to stop anything from happening while he’s young and impressionable.’
Columbus Police Assistant Chief Lem Miller had a different take, telling officers that while Hill was well-intentioned, there’s no program in place to scare misbehaving children.
Officers acted without superiors’ approval or knowledge, Miller said in a statement, according to ABC News.
“We totally understand that they were trying to do a good thing, but in hindsight, we’re not in the business of pretending to arrest somebody,” the statement said. “It could very well scare the kid straight, but on the other hand, it could possibly hurt them and make them think even worse of us the police down the road.”
