Sheriff Clarke: I would have defied Baltimore mayor’s order to stand down, ‘I report to the people’

Sheriff David Clarke told Fox News host Bill O’Reilly Thursday that he would have defied any order to “stand down” to rioters, such as the one that reportedly came from Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

“I report to the people,” the Milwaukee county sheriff said.

Clarke confirmed that his first obligation is to those who elected him and his officers — not political authority.

“So if you had been in Baltimore and you had received the order from the mayor to stand down, as we have credible reporting that she gave,” O’Reilly asked, “you would have defied the order?”

“Defied the order, sent my officers out there, made sure they had the proper resources,” Clarke told the Fox News host. “And make sure that they know they have the authority to use the reasonable amount of force to accomplish their mission.”

Protection of people and property come before his own job security, Clarke noted.

“I find it unconscionable to send men and women out into harm’s way, with no way to be able to defend themselves,” he stated.
