After canceling back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles are making a historic move.
They will play Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox in an empty stadium.
The team announced on Twitter that fans will not be permitted inside the park, though the game will be broadcast live on television and radio.
Never before has an MLB game been played in front of an empty stadium.
“After consultation with Major League Baseball and city and local officials, tomorrow’s game between the Orioles and the Chicago White Sox will begin at 2:05 p.m. ET and will be closed to the public,” the team wrote in a news release Tuesday. “The Orioles will also play their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, scheduled for May 1-3, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., while serving as the home team.”

In a separate statement Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. confirmed the unprecedented move.
“After conversations with the Orioles and local officials, we believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of City resources,” he wrote.
“Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by violence in Baltimore, and everyone in our game hopes for peace and the safety of a great American city.”
