Dad honors fallen son at flag rally: ‘A day I’ll never forget for the rest of my life’

Ever since Air Force veteran Michelle Manhart was taken away by police for protecting the American flag from desecration by protesters at Georgia’s Valdosta University, students there have demonstrated in support of Old Glory.

A particularly large rally was held on the campus Friday, and Valdosta alumnus Frankie Gay was on hand to distribute 10,000 American flags in honor of his son, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008.

“It was a very proud day for Valdosta and our hometown,” Gay told “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Saturday, saying handing out the flags was one of the easiest and most honorable things he’s ever done. “To me, the flag is more about the veterans, the men and women that put their lives on the line every day for our freedom. Everybody rallied together yesterday behind the flag, and we rallied as one. I tell you, it was a very moving day, and it’s a day I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.”

With Gay at the rally was the flag that draped his son’s casket.

“I wanted him to be a part of it,” Gay said. “I was thinking about more than just my son. A lot of his brothers, a lot of sisters, when our children go to war, when they go to the military, they sign a blank check with their lives. When they sign that signature, they’re putting their life on the line for us. And we need to remember that.”
