President Obama’s jokes earned more than a few groans from the team members at Thursday’s South Lawn ceremony honoring the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl win, prompting one to suggest that maybe he was a bit “wasted.”
Then again, maybe the jokes’ subject matter is still a touchy subject with the Patriots — “deflate-gate.”
“I usually tell a bunch of jokes at these events, but with the Patriots in town, I was worried that 11 out of 12 of them would fall flat,” Obama said, eliciting audible groans.
Following the ceremony, Patriots tight end and party hound Rob Gronkowski was asked by a reporter whether alcohol was served during their White house visit. “No, there’s no drinking. Maybe the president was getting wasted, from his ‘Deflate’ joke,” Gronkowski said.
“We’re still wondering as an organization about that, right?” Gronkowski added.
Obama honored many of the team’s individual players, including star quarterback Tom Brady, who opted not to attend the event.

One Twitter user decided to turn the team name into a political statement.

The Patriots’ championship bid this year was initially clouded by allegations a team employee had deflated nearly a dozen of the footballs for their AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The NFL has not released an official report detailing its investigation into the Jan. 18 game.

The president may not have been bombed, but his jokes apparently bombed with the Patriots. Time to hire a new White House joke writer.
