Rand Paul campaign catches heat for campaign sunglasses; ‘Rand-Bans’ have to go!

GOP presidential hopeful Rand Paul was forced to pull an item from his campaign’s store: Ray-Ban “Wayfarer” sunglasses which were rebranded as “Rand-Bans.”

The Tennessee senator’s campaign website marketed the sunglasses for $150 a pair, and described them as “the intersection of politics and cool.” Ray-Ban, however, was not amused, and asked the campaign to stop, according to The Hill.

“We learned that the Rand Paul campaign had been selling Ray-Ban sunglasses imprinted with the ‘Rand’ logo without our consent,” Jane Lehman, head of corporate communications for Luxottica, that parent company of Ray-Ban, wrote in an email to The Hill.

“After a formal request from us, they promptly removed the product from their site and agreed to cease any further use of our trademarks.”

The Rand Paul store included a photo of the late John F. Kennedy with a pair of Wayfarers atop his head, alongside one of Paul.

“I can hear Senator Bentsen now, ‘I knew Jack Kennedy and you’re no Jack Kennedy,’ ” the site said. “Well, you and I may not be Jack Kennedy, but Rand likes Raybans and now we can all own Rand branded Raybans.”

During a 1988 vice presidential debate, Republican nominee Dan Quayle compared his lack of experience to that of Kennedy’s before Kennedy was elected president. The late Lloyd Benson, then a senator representing Texas, shot back, “Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.”

The Paul campaign went on to describe the product.

“$150 is more than you might normally pay for sunglasses, but these are Raybans and even more, they are indelibly marked with the Rand Brand,” the site said. “And as always, it’s a contribution to the Rand Paul for President campaign.”
