Photo has Trey Gowdy, fellow Republican under investigation by the DC police

The Washington press corps might finally have a “phony scandal” to investigate.

U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., and chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, posed for a Twitter picture with fellow Republican Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, and the D.C. police department is on the case to see if the two conservatives violated the district’s strict anti-gun laws.

The picture shows the two congressman holding a gaudily decorated AR-15 rifle, one that Buck said is unloaded and, in any case, unable to fire anyway. But the district’s attorney general has apparently received inquiries from “news outlets” trying to find out if the pictue was evidence of illegal activity, according to The Hill.

It’s not, according to the Daily Caller, which reported that members of Congress are allowed by law to “maintain firearms within the confines of their office and they and any employee or agent of any Member of Congress may transport within the Capitol Grounds firearms unloaded and securely wrapped.”

Buck told The Hill that the rifle in question isn’t even close to crossing the legal line.

“While safety protocols call for all guns to be treated as if they are loaded, this one isn’t,” he said. “Further, a close inspection of the only public photo of the rifle will show that the bolt carrier assembly is not in the rifle; it is in fact in Colorado.

“It is a beautiful, patriotic paper weight.”

What’s interesting about this is that the police reported receiving inquiries from “news outlets” about the two congressmen and their disarmed firearm.

The D.C. news outlets that have pretty much slept through every real scandal of the Obama administration – going back to Solyndra, and Fast and Furious, the IRS and Benghazi (an Internet video no one saw?), leap into action when there’s a Republican involved.

Is anyone surprised?

The Twitter world isn’t.

Some posters recalled the 2012 incident when liberal Dick Gregory, then host of “Meet the Press,” was given a pass by the same department after he clearly violated D.C. laws by displaying a high-capacity ammunition clip during an nationally televised interview in 2012.

There’s not confirmation of what “news outlets” were involved in calling the cops on a harmless Twitter post, but it doesn’t matter much. The bottom line remains that to the mainstream media, Democrats are innocent until proven guilty. Republicans are simply guilty.

But nobody’s buying it anymore.
