Missouri town elects first black woman mayor, police force quits citing ‘safety concerns’

Mystery surrounds the resignation of five of six cops in a small Missouri town that just elected its first black female mayor, but that hasn’t stopped libs from crowing that it’s another example of American racism at work.

The town of Parma, population (pop. 713 in 2010) elected Tyus Byrd to the position mayor ousting the incumbent Randall Ramsey who served a total of 36 years in the job.

Before Byrd could be sworn in, the three part-time and two full-time officers turned in their resignations, citing “safety concerns,” according to KFVS in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Neither Byrd nor Ramsey would speculate on the reason for the resignation en masse. Other town officials who walked out without notice were the city attorney, the city clerk and the water supervisor.

Byrd, a former city clerk who was born and raised in Parma, told KFVS she couldn’t find the departing employees’ resignation letters and that the town’s computers have been cleared.

The town’s policing duties will be covered by deputies from the New Madrid County sheriff’s office, KFVS reported.

Twitter commenters picking up the story from lefty sites like the Huffington Post or the Daily Kos haven’t held back on how they’re sure the sudden turnover is due to racism innate in America.

This one is a pretty typical offering.

Now, anything is possible, and it just might be that five out of six officers on the Parma police force think they would have problems working under a black woman just because she’s a black woman. Just like it’s possible that the city attorney, the city clerk and the town’s wastewater treatment supervisor feel the same way.

But quitting a job is a pretty extreme step, and it’s not likely that eight people are going to do at once — particularly in a town with a population smaller than a good-sized high school — just out of racial pique. And the town’s computers being cleared — if they were — doesn’t sound like an act of vandalism.

Racists aren’t usually so principled. Watch this story. It’s going to be interesting.
