A Texas veterinarian set off a social media firestorm that cost her her job after posting a photo of her holding up what she called a “feral tomcat” she had just killed with a bow and arrow.
It turns out the cat was no stray – it was reportedly an elderly couple’s pet.
Kristen Lindsey posted the graphic photo on Facebook late Wednesday, mocking her role as a veterinarian.
“My first bow kill, lol,” she wrote. “The only good feral tomcat is one with an arrow through it’s head! Vet of the year award … Gladly accepted.”
Lindsey lost her job at the Washington Animal Clinic in Brenham after the photo went viral.
KBTX reported that after Lindsey was fired, duct tape was used to cover her name on a sign in front of the business.
“Our goal now is to go on and try to fix our black eye and hope people are reasonable and understand that those actions don’t anyway portray what we are for here at Washington Animal Clinic,” Dr. Bruce Buenger told KBTX. “We put our heart and soul into this place.”
Lindsey disputed that she had been fired, commenting on her post: “[N]o I did not lose my job. Lol. Psshh. Like someone would get rid of me. I’m awesome!”
But losing her job may be the least of Lindsey’s problems. Austin County Sheriff Jack Brandes said he is investigating possible criminal charges.
“This kind of stuff shouldn’t happen in our society,” he told the TV station. “It’s a very sad thing. Hopefully, we will get to the bottom of it and get the truth, 100 percent truth, and get it to the [district attorney] and put it in his hands if it needs to go any further.”
KBTX reported that the cat, a 6-year-old orange Tabby named Tiger, went missing Wednesday.
The veterinarian did have a few supporters.
“All these people in the cities just don’t understand what goes on in the country and they get in an uproar,” local resident Preston Northup told KBTX. “They ought to just mind their own business.”
