Viewers of a Seattle TV station got a rare glimpse of real news in the making when a family member of a drive-by shooting victim took over a live broadcast.
Edmond “Mackie” McNeil, whose 1-year-old niece was shot in the altercation, emerged from the hospital Thursday while KIRO-TV was in the middle of an update on the case.
“She’s going to be alright,” a distraught McNeil said after stepping in front of KIRO reporter Natasha Chen during the live shot. “We’d like the family to have peace. And people not to be talking to us and stuff. We’d like a little privacy.”
The baby was in a car seat in the back of her parents’ vehicle when two men in another car opened fire, striking the child in the head, KIRO-TV reported. Authorities believe the shooting was the result of a road rage incident, but police are “looking into all possibilities.”
“The baby’s going to make it,” McNeil told viewers. “Everything’s going to be alright. We have faith in God.”
He then made an emotional appeal to the community.
“We need to stop the Seattle violence,” McNeil said. “The CD (Central District), South End, whoever, wherever, it’s over. We’re trying to be living for our kids. Everybody needs to live for your kids, now. It’s over. You ain’t no gangster because you want to carry a gun.”
It’s time for parents to set new priorities, he added
“It’s stupid,” he said. “Live for your kids. Be a PTA parent.”
