Schools offer field trips for black students only despite parents’ objections

More than a few Indiana parents are up in arms after several South Bend elementary schools offered a series of field trips for black children only.

“We should be able to do everything together and not separate,” parent Charles Yost told ABC 57.

One would think in that in the year 2015, that would be the case.

According to Dr. G. David Moss, director for African-American student/parent services with the South Bend Community Schools Corporation, black students, statistically speaking, don’t think of college as a real possibility.

“I want these third-graders to have the opportunity to think of themselves as college students,” Moss told ABC 57.

“We take them to a college campus, have them meet African-American students, modeling the idea that as a black person, college is a great place.”

Wouldn’t college be a great place for all students? Some parents think so, and they don’t like the segregated field trip as a model.

“It creates a double standard,” parent Kelley Garing said.

Moss told ABC 57 News that it’s his job to solely think about South Bend’s African-American youth, and the field trip wasn’t meant to offend anyone.

“I was hired to look at the issues facing African-American kids … and my job specifically says that I need to develop programs and develop strategies to help these kids and their families become more successful academically,” Moss said.

Some parents worry that exclusionary programs can generate resentment among students.

“I just think it breeds intolerance and creates misunderstandings,” Garing said.
