Taking a page out of President Obama’s book on illegal immigration, an Oregon sheriff said he is too busy dealing with felonies to enforce a likely new state law mandating background checks on private gun transfers.
Under the guise that it will make it more difficult for criminals to obtain a firearm, the Oregon state Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would require criminal background checks on firearms sales and transfers between private individuals.
Violating the law would be a Class B misdemeanor.
Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel told the Herald and News the potential law appears to contradict with his county charter and that he has no plans to enforce it, saying he doesn’t have the manpower to enforce misdemeanors.
And he’s not going to waste precious time or resources harassing law-abiding people.
“I can’t enforce that law, so therefore it won’t be enforced,” Daniel said. “I have felonies going on daily in Josephine County. That’s my priorities.”
The measure now goes to the state House where it is expected to pass, making Oregon the 12th state to adopt the policy, according to the Herald and News.

Critics may argue that the sheriff cannot pick and choose the laws he is going to enforce, but his position is the likely outcome of Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder making a regular habit out of doing just that.
Regardless of how adamant the left wants to believe otherwise, actions do have consequences.
As for the law’s effectiveness, it’s unlikely that the risk of a misdemeanor charge is going to dissuade felons with long criminal records.
