Judge lashes out before sentencing teachers: It’s ‘sickest thing that’s ever happened in this town.’

An Atlanta judge excoriated a group of teachers convicted of racketeering in what he called “the sickest thing that’s ever happened in this town” before sentencing them.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter handed out harsh sentences ranging from one to five years in prison for eight of the 10 teachers for their roles in a grade-fixing scandal that rocked the city’s school system.

Baxter gave the defendants a day to negotiate deals with prosecution before issuing his sentences, but only two decided to heed the judge’s advice.

The judge followed the prosecution’s recommendations on sentencing those two, and gave one a 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. curfew at home for a year while the other received six months of weekends in jail.

The fact that so many refused his offer to allow them to negotiate with prosecutors for lighter sentences angered the judge, causing one attorney to call for him to be recused, CNN reported.

“Everybody starts crying about these educators. This was not a victimless crime that occurred in this city!” the judge shot back.

Outrage! Judge hammers white victims of armed home invasion for racism, lets criminal go free.

Baxter expressed his anger with the teachers throughout the sentencing for their refusal to accept responsibility for what they’ve been convicted of, according to CNN.

“These stories are incredible,” he said. “These kids can’t read.

“This is the time to search your soul,” he added. “It’s just taking responsibility. No one has taken responsibility that I can see.”

Of the 35 teachers, principals and testing coordinators originally indicted in the scandal in 2013 20 took plea deals.
