Couple appeals to public to end epic battle over baby name; what would you do?

A New York couple undecided on a name for their baby-to-be, has turned to an unexpected source for help: the Internet.

Launching a campaign at petitions.com, expectant father Nicholas Soukeras, is hoping to gather 100,000 signatures in favor of his choice for the baby’s name, Spyridon.

Unfortunately for Nicholas, his wife Kseniya prefers the more common name of Michael, the New York Post reported.

“The petitioner’s wife, Kseniya Mihailovna Soukeras (née Kudzin, a.k.a. “Kudin”) and future mother to his heir, is of the opinion that the name “Spyridon” is archaic, base, bereft of elegance and unsuitable for a child living in 21st century America,” Nicholas wrote in the petition.

“The petitioner’s wife is a native of the “Rebublic” of Belarus and has been exposed to such barbaric names as Arman, Osip, Igor, Rurik, Ruslan, Artem, Vadim and Zoran (to name a few) throughout her Soviet childhood,” he continued.

Soukeras believes his wife’s Russian rendering of the name Michael would be pronounced “Mischa” which, he adds, is “a name also shared by B-list Hollywood actress Mischa Barton, star of such films ‘Virgin Territory’ and ‘Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard.'”

While it may seem like good-natured fun, the couple says the name wrangling is taking a toll.

“The argument is serious. It’s not a joke,” Kseniya lamented.

“There are nights,” her husband shared, “we’re bickering about it back and forth and we won’t talk to each other .”

Ultimately, the petition — currently with a mere 240 signatures — and all of the name debate may be unnecessary. The couple doesn’t know if they are having a boy or a girl.

“But my husband is convinced,” Kseniya told the Post. “He thinks he’s a psychic — he thinks he can see through the belly.”
