Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s supporters are excited over the prospect of another Clinton presidency, even if they can’t explain why she’d run.
The confusion was on full display Friday, when left-leaning MSNBC host Alex Wagner asked “Ready For Hillary” senior adviser Tracey Sefl about her boss’ intentions.
“Does Hillary know why she’s running for president this time around?” Wagner asked.
Sefl said she was sure Clinton knew the reason, but Wagner pressed her on whether Clinton let her in on the information.
“Well, what I know is her lifetime record of all the fights that she’s waged on behalf of women and girls and middle-class families, and all of those things that she’s done, whether as first lady or in the White House or as a senator,” Sefl said. “There’s really a record here, and I’m certain that she would just be building on that in a way that’s perhaps newly emphatic. It’s very exciting.”
Even Wagner was taken aback on that one.
“I take issue with the semi-circular logic there, which is she’s going forward to revisit what she’s done before,” Wagner said.
Sefl tried half-heartedly to clarify.
“She’s continuing what she’s done,” she said. “That’s the way I would look at it. It’s a continuance.”
When asked to elaborate, Sefl launched into a string of banal generalities.
“I think she’s spoken a lot and very emphatically about economic opportunities and the types of broad structural change that she believes needs to happen in this country,” she said.
It was clear she wasn’t answering the question: What change? And how will she implement it?
The exchange was reminiscent of an interview last year that showed Clinton was unable to offer a “marquee accomplishment” during her tenure in the State Department. The Washington Post reported:
When Sawyer asked Clinton to detail a marquee accomplishment or signature doctrine as secretary, she gave no answer — an exchange her Republican critics immediately highlighted.
The answer seems to come down to one point: It’s time for a female president.
We went through that in 2008 — only then, it was time for a black president.
