State Dept. trips over itself trying to explain why Iran claims US is lying about deal

The White House is struggling to not look stupid while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are saying America is lying about the facts of the deal the U.S. made with them.

“Hours after the #talks, Americans offered a fact sheet that most of it was contrary to what was agreed. They always deceive & breach promises,” Ayatollah Khamenei wrote in a tweet that was retweeted by Rouhani.

Iran contends the framework they agreed upon included the immediate removal of all sanctions upon the signing of the agreement while the White House stated sanction relief would be gradual.

“That was released by the United States based on–you know, we told them what we were going to, you know, talk about the agreement publicly, but it wasn’t a negotiated document,” State Department spokesperson Jeff Rathke said at a press conference on the topic Thursday.

When pressed by AP reporter Matt Lee as to whether or not Iran agreed to the fact sheet circulated by the state department Rathke again stumbled over his words.

“It wasn’t, it wasn’t a negotiated fact sheet,” Rathke said. “That was – that was released by, by the United States based on, you know, we told them that we were going to — to, you know, talk about the agreement publicly, um, but it wasn’t a negotiated document.”

If they cannot even agree on the details of a fact sheet how do they expect Iran to hold true to the terms of any deal?

The devil is in the details.

And across the negotiating table from us.
