A standoff over health care is stalling a potential $470 million cut to the communications tax in Florida.
The House by a 86-29 vote on April 2, approved a $76.2 billion budget that eschewed federal funding to expand Medicaid for uninsured Floridians.
A day earlier, the Senate unanimously approved a $80.4 billion budget that included the funding.
The potential showdown between the two chambers before the session ends at midnight May 1 and the uncertainty over the final budget figure has stalled a plan backed by Gov. Rick Scott, announced in January, to cut $470 million from residents’ yearly cable TV and cellphone bills.
Hukill’s bill has been stuck in the Senate Appropriations Committee awaiting funding since March 18. Health care funding, Hukill said, is holding up her bill.
