A Florida photographer captured an unusual site this week.
A bobcat dragging a shark out of the ocean.
According to the photographer, John Bailey, the bobcat jumped into the water, grabbed the shark, and began dragging it onto the beach, WPTV reported.
He believes the bobcat was startled by his presence, however, which caused it to drop the shark and run into the forest.
Wildlife experts told WPTV that it isn’t uncommon for a bobcat to be roaming the beach, but catching one doing so is. Catching one catching a fish is even rarer.
“My first reaction was amazement that somebody actually took that picture because bobcats are generally very, very reclusive,” Amy Kight, the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary animal care director, told WPTV. “You don’t really see them out and about too often.”
The incredible photo has also drawn its share of controversy, with several viewers claiming it was Photoshopped, but Liz Barraco of the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission thinks it’s authentic.
“There is no reason to believe its fake,” she said.
Real or fake, the Twitterverse had a lot of fun with it.
What would be more shocking? A four foot shark near Vero Beach or the bobcat that fished it out of the water? Yikes. pic.twitter.com/wNcITsjkKc
