A surprising new poll shows a prominent Republican in the lead for Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat in the liberal state of California.
Though she has given no indication she intends to run, Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state for the George W. Bush administration, led the Field poll that sampled 972 likely voters in the deep blue state.

Respondents were given a list of 18 possible candidates with no limit on how many they could vote for and asked who they “would be inclined or not inclined to vote for.”
Rice, like the first to declare for the seat Democrat Attorney General Kamala Harris, polled at 74 percent among her own party.
However, she led Harris among voters overall, with the support of 49 percent versus Harris’ 46 percent.
The primary is set for June 2016.
