‘Revenge porn’ website owner goes to slammer for 18 years; punishment enough?

A San Diego man who used the Internet to prey on women was repaid for his crimes Friday, when he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for what has been dubbed his “revenge porn” campaign.

Kevin Bollaert, 28, posted on his website nude photos that were submitted to him by the women’s ex-boyfriends, then charged the victims fees to have the pictures removed, according to the New York Daily News.

Bollaert was convicted in February of 21 counts of identity theft and six counts of extortion.

The judge also ordered Bollaert to pay his victims $10,000 in restitution.

Several victims appeared at the hearing to testify of the emotional pain and humiliation they experienced as a result of Bollaert’s actions. He was jailed immediately after sentencing.

“It’s just broken me on a level that’s not describable,” one victim said. “The only thing I have left is shame and anger.”

The Daily News reported that Bollaert burst into tears during the women’s testimony, but it’s unclear whether their words moved him or it was the realization that he was going to be sent away for a long time that got to him.

The Daily News reported that his extortion scheme used two websites:

He encouraged men to send naked pictures of their ex-lovers and he would post them online to get revenge.

If anyone complained, Bollaert would direct the woman to another website, Change My Reputation, which charged up to $350 to remove the porn-style pics.

Bollaert posted over 10,000 photographs in the 10 months he ran the websites, raking in about $900 in ad revenue and about $30,000 from his victims.

He was facing up to 20 years in prison.

It was a fitting end to a horrific crime, but what about the ex-boyfriends who sent Bollaert the photos? Shouldn’t they be prosecuted, too?
