ABC station refuses to run ad criticizing Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel

A Chicago-area TV station refuses to air a political commercial that criticizes Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

ABC affiliate WLS Channel 7 stands alone in its decision — all other outlets are running the ad, which was produced by Emanuel’s re-election opponent.

The station said it takes issue with the ad’s claim that Emanuel made $18 million between 2009 and 2012 as an investment banker and used his position as mayor to help his brother turn the Uber car service into a billion-dollar empire.

Lynn Sweet of The Chicago-Sun Times disagreed.

“Almost everything in that ad had been well covered by the media. In fact, almost every point was discussed, ” she told Tucker Carlson on “Fox & Friends.” “This mayor’s race and Rahm’s struggle to keep in office is not a surprise to the people who live in Chicago.”

Carlson pointed out that Chicago’s high crime rate and financial problems are plaguing Emanuel’s re-election bid.

“Right now, I think Rahm’s challenge is to build a coalition,” Sweet said. “Rahm doesn’t have that kind of streetwise, grassroots momentum that [opponent] Chuy Garcia has.”

Emanuel’s real competition is himself, Sweet added.
