Vijay Chokal-Ingam, brother of actress, comedian and author Mindy Kaling, admitted he pretended to be black to get into the St. Louis University School of Medicine – and is now using his experience to expose affirmative action as the lie that he says it is.
Despite having a so-so grade point average and MCAT score, the university accepted Indian-American Chokal-Ingam – but only after they thought he was black.

He posted the before and after pictures to his Twitter profile, and explained on his website how he so easily fooled the university.
I got into medical school because I said I was black. The funny thing is I’m not.
In my junior year of college, I realized that I didn’t have the grades or test scores to get into medical school, at least not as an Indian-American.
Still, I was determined to become a doctor and I knew that admission standards for certain minorities under affirmative action were, let’s say… less stringent?
So, I shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man.
My change in appearance was so startling that my own fraternity brother didn’t recognize me at first. I even joined the Organization of Black Students and started using my embarrassing middle name that I had hidden from all of my friends since I was a 9 years old.

Even though Chokal-Ingam is a self-proclaimed “Affirmative Action Hacktivist,” and says “lucky for you” he never became a doctor, he didn’t call out the lie that is affirmative action immediately after he could have exposed it.
Instead, he continued to pose as a black man and conducted what he called a “social experiment.”
It isn’t clear what brought on the sudden act of consciousness.
Perhaps it was maturity, guilt, or the fact that he’s promoting a book he is working on called, “Almost Black.” Whatever the reason, Chokal-Ingam is, for now, remaining a vocal critic of affirmative action and somewhat of a thorn in his famous sister’s side.
