In what appears to be little more than an extension of negotiations until June 30, President Obama announced Thursday afternoon that a “historic” deal has been reached with Iran over its nuclear program.
Sort of.
While not exactly a deal, the parties reached an agreement — to implement a final deal by the end of June, according to Fox News.
“Today, after many months of tough principal diplomacy, we have achieved the framework for that deal,” Obama said from the Rose Garden. “And it is a good deal. A deal that meets our core objectives.”
It’s also a deal none of the parties have formally agreed to, and even Obama seems to have doubts — note the strategically place “if” in the following remark.
“I am convinced that if this framework leads to a final comprehensive deal, it will make our country, our allies and our world safer,” Obama said.
Nevertheless, Obama laid the groundwork for the possibility that Iran will cheat.
“If Iran cheats, the world will know it. If we see something suspicious, we will inspect it,” he said. “With this deal, Iran will face more inspections than any other country in the world.”
Interestingly, the president did not call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu beforehand to discuss the agreement, saying he planned to call later in the day.
However, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz made it clear his country was less than thrilled about the announcement.
“Those celebrating in Lausanne are disconnected from reality, one in which Iran has refused to make concessions on the nuclear issue and continues to threaten Israel and all other countries in the Middle East,” Steinitz said, according to CNN.
“Since the statement is far from being a real agreement, we will continue our efforts to explain and convince the world in the hope of preventing a bad agreement, or at least make the necessary amendments and improvements. ”
As for the possibility of Iran cheating, social media had its own thoughts on the matter — it’s safe to say the responses were not in keeping with Obama’s visions.
Here’s a sampling of responses on Twitter, including an astute observation from conservative stalwart Michelle Malkin:
#IfIranCheats – Obama won’t be around to clean up the mess. Well, actually, nobody will be around the clean up the mess.
