A popular, family-owned restaurant in a small Indiana town is closing its doors after nine years because of hate-filled backlash from the militant LGBT community after making an honest statement.
But the family also finds itself the recipient of nationwide support.
The controversy began when the owner’s daughter told a local TV station Wednesday that although anyone is welcome at Memories Pizza, their family restaurant, their religious beliefs would prevent them from catering a gay wedding.
The station was soliciting opinions of Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
“We’re not discriminating against anyone, that’s just our belief, and anyone has the right to believe in anything,” Crystal O’Connor said, according to Fox News.
That’s all it took. Prior to the airing of that statement, Memories Pizza had two Yelp reviews — both of them positive. One day later, they had garnered over 1,200 — all of them negative.
Here are a few examples, according to GoFundMe.com.
“Dave B” said, “I’ll order my Double Stuffed crust pizza without the hate, elsewhere!”
“Bruce L” added, “Terrible place, owners chose to be heterosexual. The biggest bigots are the most closeted. No gay man or woman is going to order pizza for a wedding. These people should be put out of business.”
Others uploaded pictures of scantily clad men. The gay community considers tolerance to be a one-way street, apparently.
Wednesday afternoon, Blaze contributor Lawrence Billy Jones III decided to help Memories Pizza and the O’Connor family through their rough period. Using “GoFundMe,” he’s raised close to $50,000 in the first 11 hours.
Memories Pizza has had to close its doors and not answer the phone. The owners have no way of telling actual orders from the phony ones.
“It’s really confusing to me,” Kevin O’Connor told Fox News. “I’m just a little guy in a little, tiny town. That’s where I’ve been my whole life.”
He added, “It’s just been ugly. I don’t know what to call it.”
It’s called hate and intolerance.
