Hero Navy SEAL who was shot 27 times has new mission

A former Navy SEAL, who survived a grenade blast and 27 gunshot wounds in a single firefight in Iraq is now dedicating his life to helping other veterans fight for their own survival.

Mike Day is representing the Dallas-based Carrick Brain Centers, the facility that nursed him back to recovery from that 2007 firefight, by competing in a half-Ironman triathlon race, according to WTKR News Channel 3.

Eight years ago, Day was the point man when his SEAL team entered a building in a town near Fallujah. One of the rooms in held four al-Qaida terrorists.

They all opened fire the moment Day stepped into that room, hitting him 27 times. Eleven of the shots hit Day’s body armor — the other 16 weren’t so lucky for him. Nonetheless, he managed to kill two of the insurgents before one of them tossed a grenade in his direction. It exploded 10 feet away and caused Day to lose consciousness.

Day came to about a minute later, grabbed his pistol and took out another two terrorists.

Seventy-two hours later, he was in a hospital in the United States. WTKR reported:

In the course of 16 days in the hospital, Day lost 55 pounds but after those 16 days, he was discharged. Day was awarded the Purple Heart. He has also earned the Silver and Bronze Star along with a dozen other medals from his 20 years in the SEALs.

Now Day has a new mission– he’s trying to raise money for Carrick, which specializes in working with wounded warriors like Day and dependent children who have suffered severe brain injuries. Day says the center is on the cutting edge of brain care and adds that most of their treatments are not yet covered by insurance companies.

With little surprise, that firefight from eight years ago also left Day with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, which Carrick also treated, too.

Now, Day wants to give back, and hopes to raise $75,000 for the center by enlisting sponsors for his Ironman competition. As of Monday, he’s already over the $70,000 mark.
