Talk about taking a bull by the horns.
A Utah business owner who doesn’t like being told what to do let a dispute simmer with his neighbors for weeks over huge, cone-shaped genitalia on the otherwise life-sized bull sculpture on a sign outside his restaurant, but he finally decided to do something about it.
“The famous weenie’s gone,” Barista’s Restaurant owner Stephen Ward said Friday afternoon, according to the St. George News. “But the reason I did it is because I didn’t like it.”
A lot of other people didn’t like it either. Angry residents – who found the conical shape offensive – started a petition to have Ward denied when his business license came up for renewal.
It wasn’t just over the bull, Ward said. He claims he has been battling with the city and its residents for six years. Most recently, he was denied a request in January for a license upgrade that would have allowed his restaurant to sell liquor instead of being limited to beer and wine.
He said he’s planning to sue the city over the license, as well as planning a lawsuit over the petition against his business license.
But back to the bull.
Ward wanted one and all to know he took care of the bull for his own pleasure, not anyone else’s.
“I told them I am not removing the penis for you or because of your complaints,” he told the Spectrum newspaper. “I don’t like you. I’m doing it for me. I just decided it would look better without the weenie. And oh my God! It’s Beautiful.”
Ward’s wife, Pamela, said the bull’s equipment had done nothing but good.
“We’re still busy from it. People came in here – people love controversy, you know – they love it and they want to see what’s going on; and they’ll come in here and they’ll say ‘wow, we came in just because we read this article’ so it really helped us a lot. It did,” she said.
“It gave us probably double or triple the business for this time of the year, and the beautiful weather, too.
There’s no such thing as bad publicity.
