Another Wasserman Schultz whopper: Spirit of Israel lives in Democratic Party

With U.S.-Israeli relations currently at just about absolute zero — minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit — U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz claimed in a piece she wrote for The Hill that, according to its headline, “The spirit of Israel lives in the Democratic Party.”

The South Florida Democrat, and chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, was writing in response to a statement by U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, during an interview earlier this month on Boston Herald Radio.

“I don’t understand how Jews in America can be Democrats first and Jewish second and support Israel along the line of just following their president,” he said, according to BuzzFeed. “They’re knee-jerk supporters of the president’s policy.”

After using The Hill as her soapbox to lambaste Republicans in general and King in particular, she observed that “the Democratic Party is the natural home of Jewish Americans.”

I can’t argue the point that the majority of American Jews identify with the Democratic Party — whether it’s natural or not is debatable.

But her train of thought began to derail when she said, “American Jews are overwhelmingly Democrats because of our values, and, yes, because of our deep connection to and support of the State of Israel.”

Then Wasserman Schultz went completely off the tracks with this statement:

To those ends, we are proud of the way President Obama has supported Israel over his tenure – from unprecedented military and intelligence cooperation and economic collaboration to affirming Israel’s right to exist, to defend herself, and to thrive.

I believe she has Obama confused with pretty much all previous presidents — well, excepting Jimmy Carter, of course.

And I don’t even have to make the effort to list all the reasons our president is no friend to Israel — folks on Twitter did that for me. Here are a few examples:

Playing off the article’s headline, “the spirit of Israel,” one user observed:

And another, noting Wasserman Schultz’s tendency toward hyperbole, tweeted:

And that doesn’t even take into account Obama’s repeated snubs directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

If and when Wasserman Schultz may decide to leave the world of politics, I see a successful career ahead for her writing fiction — she’s had plenty of practice.
