Amir Hossein Motaghi, a former media aide for Iranian President Hassan Rouhan’s election campaign, claims the United States is acting in Iran’s interests, not on behalf of Western powers, according to a breaking story in The Telegraph.

“The U.S. negotiating team are mainly there to speak on Iran’s behalf with other members of the 5+1 countries and convince them of a deal,” Motaghi told a TV station after announcing his defection.

The 5+1 countries include the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China and France, plus Germany.

Omri Ceren, managing director for press and strategy at the Israel Project, tweeted The Telegraph’s report, then added a personal observation in a second tweet:

Those responding on Twitter were outraged, but not necessarily surprised.

But the president isn’t the only one to blame. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is representing the United States in the talks, has been accused of bending over backwards to accommodate Iran out of his own self-interests.

Kerry is hoping to be named a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and use the distinction as a springboard for a possible 2016 presidential run, according to The Hill.
