In response to the racial strife brought on by the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, much of it instigated by a misinterpretation of the facts, America is being led down a slippery slope when it comes to race relations.
And it’s a slippery slope that takes the country back to the era of Jim Crow, only in reverse order.
An African-American journalism student at Ryerson University is advocating for segregating students based on race, and Huffington Post seemingly endorses this overtly racist action against white folks.
Huffington Post published a column on its website last week by Aeman Ansari, a student responding in support of a recent incident at the university where two students were kicked out of a meeting on racism because they were insufficiently “racialized” to attend — see “too white.”
Ansari said it’s essential for minority groups to have safe spaces on campus “to engage with people who understand what they go through.”
“Marginalized groups have a right to claim spaces in the public realm where they can share stories about the discrimination they have faced without judgment and intrusion from anyone else,” she wrote.
According to Ansari, safe spaces “are rare places in the world not controlled by individuals who have power, who have privilege.” Or, in other words, white folks.
“These spaces … are crucial to resistance of oppression and we, as a school and as a society, need to respect them,” she said.
The Federalist Papers Project called this mentality the “new Jim Crow.”
“[Ansari] is pulling the same exact thing that she is angry that white people did in the past,” Kimberly Morin wrote on the groups website.
“She claims white people can’t experience racism but she just handed out a dose of it.”
And it’s a practice that is already playing out across America.
In a move that harkens back to the days of segregation in the Deep South, only in reverse order, an Illinois high school principal held an event that white students were not allowed to attend.
Nathaniel Rouse, principal of Oak Park and River Forest High School located in the suburbs of Chicago, organized a “Black Lives Matter” event in February that was “limited to black students only,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
The edict was strictly enforced, with white students being denied entry at the doors.
An image of that draws to mind the nine African American students in Arkansas who were turned away at the doors of Little Rock Central High School in 1957.
A sad testament to the legacy of Barack Obama, the nation’s first African-American president.
