Talking points 2.0: Republicans demand answers on Susan Rice’s Bergdahl BS

Republican members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are once again asking for emails, memos and other communications, which led to National Security Advisor Susan Rice’s talking points.

No, not the one where she blamed Benghazi on a YouTube video: The one where she said Bowe Bergdahl served “with honor and distinction.”

Rice made her characterization of Bergdahl last year, one day after his exchange for five Taliban commanders that were being held at Guantanamo Bay.

On March 25, Bergdahl was charged with two counts under the Uniform Code of Military Justice: The first for “desertion with intent to shirk important or hazardous duty,” and second, more serious charge of “misbehavior before the enemy by endangering the safety of a command, unit or place.”

Her June 1 statement marks the second time the Obama administration has apparently given Rice marching orders to to present a White House version of events to the media.

The first occurred on Sept. 16, 2012, on the Sunday following the attack on the U.S. foreign mission in Benghazi, Libya. That incident resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including that of then-Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

Bringing the calendar ahead two years to her more recent statement, the notion that Bergdahl served “with honor and distinction” was even more fantastical. His former platoon mates came forward from the start and labeled Bergdahl a deserter.

The GOP lawmakers now want some answers.

“The day after that transfer, June 1, 2014, White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice appeared on the ABC television program ‘This Week,’” Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, amd Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla. wrote to White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on Thursday, according to The Blaze.

“In response to questions from host George Stephanopoulos about Sgt. Bergdahl, Rice stated: ‘He is going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction. And we’ll have the opportunity eventually to learn what has transpired in the past years.’ ”

It was statements like that that helped smooth the ruffled feathers of lawmakers who had not been briefed prior to the exchange as the law requires.

Chaffetz and DeSantis asked that Obama’s chief of staff produce “all documents, memoranda, notes, talking points, and records that were created in relation to National Security Advisor Susan Rice’s appearance on ‘This Week’ on June 1, 2014.”
