Now that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been officially charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, was President Obama’s decision to give up five senior Taliban members all worth it?
That was the issue when Fox News host Megyn Kelly grilled State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Wednesday’s “The Kelly File.”
Making the value of the trade even more suspect, three of the five Taliban leaders have reportedly made efforts to return to their former life of terror.
Loyally holding to the party line about one of the Obama presidency’s biggest fiascos, Psaki claimed the swap was “absolutely” worth it.
“We have a commitment to our men and women serving … in our military, defending our national security every day, that we will do everything we can to bring them home, and that’s what we did in this case,” she told Kelly.
A decision “doesn’t reach his [Obama’s] desk unless it was a tough decision,” Psaki said. “was certainly the case here.”
“It was a tough decision, but was it the right decision?” Kelly shot back, noting there were other methods available to bring Bergdahl home, and that, according to the Army, he betrayed his country.
Psaki returned to the theme of leaving no man behind, adding that the U.S. is tracking the communications of the five Taliban commanders in Qatar.
Kelly said that because the five Taliban will be free to leave in two months, the trade “doesn’t seem like a good idea,” adding that it appeared more to be “an effort to get these guys out of Gitmo” than to return Bergdahl to the U.S.
Kelly closed with a statement made by National Security Advisor Susan Rice — one that should be coming back to haunt her.
“Do you think that he served with honor and distinction?” Kelly pressed. “Did Susan Rice have it right?”
“Look, I think that we look at Sgt. Bergdahl as somebody who served his country, as many men and women have,” Psaki said, ignoring the “honor and distinction” part.
