Fox News host Megyn Kelly confronted Sen. Ted Cruz about his accomplishments Tuesday, giving Cruz a chance to respond to liberal media criticisms.
Cruz, a first-term Texas Republican, has been maligned by the liberal media for years, of course, but even more so since he announced his run for president on Monday. On Fox News’ “The Kelly File,” Kelly said they’ve called him “scary, dangerous and slimy.”
“There’s nothing like the warm embrace of the mainstream media,” Cruz joked.
Becoming serious, Cruz told Kelly his favorite media criticism from the New York Times, “Cruz cannot be nominated because the Washington elites hate him.”
“If you’re looking for a candidate embraced by the Washington political elite, I ain’t your guy,” he said.
Kelly asked Cruz to respond to Charles Krauthammer’s remarks that we’ve already tried a one-term senator.

“Unlike Barack Obama, before the Senate, I wasn’t a community organizer,” Cruz said.
“I spent five-and-a-half years as the solicitor general of Texas, the chief lawyer for the state,” representing Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court, he said.
Turning to Cruz’s time in the Senate, Kelly pressed, “What have you actually accomplished?”
Cruz responded, “Stopping bad things from happening.”
Slamming President Obama for his response to the Sandy Hook killings, Cruz highlighted his own opposition to Obama’s gun control control proposals.
“In the last two years, virtually nothing passed the Senate,” Cruz said.
“As a freshman senator, I had more legislation pass the Senate than all but a handful of Republicans.”
Kelly moved to Cruz’s national appeal, comparing him to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul. She asked if Cruz can win beyond the GOP base.
Cruz argued that he can, citing as an example that had more Hispanic support in Texas than Mitt Romney in 2008. Kelly challenged him on his amnesty and immigration positions.
“I think there’s a lot of bipartisan agreement. We gotta secure the borders. We should reject amnesty, and we should improve and streamline legal immigration,” Cruz responded.
Cruz remained steadfast in his belief that he can build coalitions and win.
“In the first day, we’ve raised over $1 million dollars” from grassroots supporters, he said.
When Kelly asked Cruz why he’s running, his response was simple and direct.
“I am fighting for freedom.”
