Americans would prefer Frank Underwood, the fictional, power-hungry president from “House of Cards,” to the real-life power-hungry President Barack Obama, according to a recent poll.
According to Business Insider:
Underwood, the fictional commander-in-chief portrayed by actor Kevin Spacey, earned a 57% favorable rating in a new Reuters-Ipsos poll compared to the 46% of respondents who held a favorable opinion of Obama.
Obama himself has expressed admiration for the savage politico from the Beltway drama, saying in 2013 that he wished Washington was as “ruthlessly efficient” as it is in the Netflix series.
That may explain a lot: Ignoring even his own party members in Congress; pursuing a treaty with Iran without feeling the need for Senate ratification; excoriating the U.S. Supreme Court — a co-equal branch of government — and bypassing Congress — another co-equal branch of government — to enact his own legislation.
Business Insider concluded that “truth is clearly less popular than fiction.”
But just maybe the American people believe that Spacey’s portrayal of ruthlessness is merely preferable to the true-to-life Chicago-style ruthlessness Obama brings to the White House.
