Played for fools: Kerry, Obama cite ‘progress’ on Iran talks; how does Iran respond?

Iran’s “Supreme leader,” Ali Khamenei called for “death to America” during his address to a crowd in Tehran Saturday, while Secretary of State John Kerry claimed “substantial progress” on a nuke deal that would give Iran the means to bring “death to America.”

Meanwhile, President Obama claimed in an interview Saturday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pre-election statements “erode the name of democracy.”

What a screwed up world this is, huh?

During Khamenei’s speech, the crowd began chanting, “Death to America,” and the ayatollah responded: “Of course yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure,” according to The Times of Israel.

He then described the “pressure” he felt Iran was under.

“They insist on putting pressure on our dear people’s economy,” he said, referring to economic sanctions, many of which have already been lifted.

Meanwhile, Kerry claimed “substantial progress” on reaching a deal with Iran.

“We have an opportunity to get this right,” Kerry told reporters in Lausanne, Switzerland, where negotiations are being held.

Those negotiations are reportedly zeroing in on Iran reducing its current 10,000 centrifuges to 6,000, according to The Associated Press. These machines are used to enrich nuclear material for use in the manufacture of a nuclear weapon.

Iran could amass enough material for a single nuclear bomb in only a few months using its 10,000 centrifuges, The AP reported. Reducing that number to 6,000 won’t have a significant effect.

On Thursday, which was Nowruz, the Persian New Year, President Obama bypassed Iran’s leadership and appealed directly to the Iranian people in a video message posted online, The AP reported.

“Our negotiations have made progress, but gaps remain,” Obama said.
“If Iran’s leaders can agree to a reasonable deal, it can lead to a better path — the path of greater opportunities for the Iranian people.”

But Khamenei took to Twitter to call out the president’s remarks.

So the president and his secretary of state talk about getting “this right” with Iran, and Iran’s leader says “of course, death to America.” Meanwhile, Obama claims the victory of the newly elected leader of the only democracy in the Middle East actually eroding democracy.

Maybe it’s not a screwed up world after all — maybe it’s just a screwed up administration.
