Conservative ESPN host Stephen A. Smith believes that every black person in America should vote Republican for one election.
Speaking at the Impact Symposium at Vanderbilt University on Tuesday, Smith used a powerful but little-used weapon in addressing racial inequality in politics: logic.
Smith’s speech was captured on audio by Breitbart, in which he said, “What I dream is that for one election, just one, every black person in America vote Republican.”
He related the story of the civil rights movement, and how southern Democrats opposed it, but “because President Lyndon B. Johnson was a Democrat, black America assumed the Democrats were for it,” while it was the Republican senate that passed civil rights legislation.
“Did you know that since 1964, black America hasn’t given the Republican Party more than 15% of its vote?” Smith said, then posed this question, “My point is: when you go buy a house, do you look at [only] one?”
If blacks in America weren’t a shoe-in for Democrats, Smith told the crowd, both parties would be more responsive to their real needs.
“Flatter me. What you got? Let me see what you have to offer,” Smith said. “We don’t do that with politics, then we blame white America for our disenfranchisement. It is us.
“Black folks in America are telling one party, ‘We don’t give a damn about you.’ They’re telling the other party ‘You’ve got our vote.’ Therefore, you have labeled yourself ‘disenfranchised’ because one party knows they’ve got you under their thumb. The other party knows they’ll never get you and nobody comes to address your interest.”
Smith closed his remarks with this: “I hate the fact that anybody is allowed to believe that they have a bloc of people in the palm of their hand. That disgusts me.”
