Check the date: Math nerds celebrate once-in-a-century event with flair

Today has been dubbed “Super Pi Day” for the unusual similarities of the March 14, 2015, date and the pi mathematical equation, 3.1415, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Don’t expect to see another such calendar coincidence for 100 years.

That’s why both pi lovers and pie lovers are celebrating.

One special case on point is Chicago couple Dana Emanuel and Byron Clarke who decided to make pi day also their wedding day, according to the New York Daily News.

“The guests are really getting into and are able to laugh about it,” said Clarke. “It kind of plays into our personalities and humor will hopefully be a big part of the day.”

Their engagement date also had mathematical significance — June 28 — 6.28, or two pi.

“Our friends are wacky like we are,” joked Emanuel.

Clarke is a number-crazy certified public accountant with a longtime love of math while Emanuel has such a sweet tooth she’s been a member of the American Pie Council for nearly a decade.

Pie even played a major role in their courtship.

“We won a dessert-making competition at a fundraiser for Blue Sky Bakery in October 2013 — and the prize was two pies!” the couple wrote on their wedding website “Which, when written mathematically, is 6.28…”

And they’re carrying the whole pi thing even further. The Daily News reported:

The bakery will supply the wedding desserts and at 9:26 p.m. — the next three numbers in the pi sequence — the couple will toast the mutual friends who first set them up.

Emanuel and Clarke never really considered getting up early enough to tie the knot at 9:26:53 a.m., the next five digits of pi. But another couple, Kris Finch and Theresa Fulton, plan to do just that, according to a profile on the California couple in the Wall Street Journal.

“It’s a once in a lifetime occurrence,” Fulton told the Journal of their planned “Super Pi Day” matrimony.

Here are some other Pi Day events:

— Runners on New York City’s Roosevelt Island will take off on a 3.14-mile course at exactly 9:26:53 a.m. Saturday on what is billed as a “Girls Prep Ultimate Pi Day Pi K.”
