‘Blue Lives Matter’ video helps put things in perspective

After two police officers were shot Thursday during protests in Ferguson, Mo., the Independent Journal Review asked the public if ”blue lives matter,” using a hashtag that borrowed from the popular #BlackLivesMatter campaign.

Most of the answers videotaped by the publication were heartwarming.

“That policeman is a citizen just like we are,” one man said. “A policeman doesn’t get up in the morning and say, ‘You know what? I’m gonna go kill somebody.’”

Another said many may get nervous when they see police, but the men and women in blue are necessary to public safety.

“When something happens, who you calling? 911,” he said.

Of the seven interviewed, only one had something negative to say about police officers.

“I can’t really recall that many positive situations I’ve had with a police officer,” he said, adding that officers could better serve the community “by policing and not harassing.”

At the end of the video, the first man interviewed underscored why police are important to any community.

“They matter just as much as we do,” he said. “More so because we say that we trust them with our lives to protect and serve.”
