All in due time.
President Obama took a lot of criticism Thursday for not issuing a public statement on the ambush of the two police officers shot in the streets of Ferguson, Mo., with the president opting to post a comment on Twitter instead.
But Obama did finally speak about the incident — at his convenience and on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
While not on the same scale of playing a round of golf after commenting on the beheading of American journalist James Foley, Obama squeezed in a few remarks between yuks with the late night comedian.
Naturally, Obama began by justifying much of lynch mob’s actions in the beleaguered city, saying the protesters “had some very legitimate grievances.”
“What had been happening in Ferguson was oppressive and objectionable and was worthy of protest,” Obama said. “But there was no excuse for criminal acts.”
And then it was back to the laughs which included a Kimmel staple, “Mean Tweets,” where guests read disparaging tweets about themselves.
The tweets Obama read included:
“Is there any way we could fly Obama to some golf course halfway around the world and just leave him there?”
“How do you make Obama’s eyes light up? Shine a flashlight in his ears.”
“Somebody send Obama some tips how to be a good president. haha, like I bet that would help. lol.”
No surprise, he was intrigued by the suggestion of being left on a golf course, saying: “I think that’s a great idea!”
It’s a good thing Obama can laugh off criticism, because plenty was forthcoming about his appearance on Kimmel’s show. Criticism that included the cost to taxpayers, as seen on social media.
Here is a sampling of the responses as seen on Twitter:
