Patrick Murphy and a Brief History of US Senate Bids by Florida US Reps –Two-term Florida Congressman Patrick Murphy is expected to announce his candidacy for Florida’s 2016 U.S. Senate race later this month – giving Democrats a centrist candidate in what they hope is one of many pick-up opportunities as they seek to retake the chamber for the 115th Congress. If Murphy enters the race it will be despite the uncertainty of incumbent Marco Rubio’s reelection plans. Rubio is considered more likely than not to enter the Republican presidential sweepstakes this cycle. Read more
Florida GOP officially starts search for top press posts – Political PR pro Sarah Bascom of Bascom Communications has officially launched the search for communications director and press secretary for the Republican Party of Florida, continuing in her capacity as interim communications director. The post below just hit online via Bascom Communications’ Facebook page and Bascom’s personal page but my phone is already ringing with people interested and asking advice on how to land the gig. Florida governor wants to take California jobs home with him – Gov. Jerry Brown has a new Republican antagonist named Rick. Following in the footsteps of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is planning a trip to California next month in an attempt to lure companies to relocate to the Sunshine State. Scott is targeting shipping companies bothered by the labor dispute that threatened to shut down Southern California ports last month. An agreement was reached, but officials said it could take three months to clear a cargo backlog. Read more
Class size limits could be eased for school districts – Class size limits could be eased for Florida’s schools under a bill now moving in the Florida Legislature. A House committee approved the measure on Thursday. A 2002 state constitutional amendment limits classes in core subjects to 18 students in kindergarten through third grade, 22 in fourth through eighth grade and 25 in high school. The state now penalizes districts for every class over those limits. Read more
Florida lawmaker skeptical carbon dioxide causes global warming – As Gov. Rick Scott’s administration is making national news after reports he banned usage of the term “climate change,” one lawmaker on Thursday questioned the science regarding carbon dioxide’s role in air pollution and global warming. Members of the House Energy and Utilities Subcommittee were considering legislation requiring lawmakers to sign off on Florida’s plan to comply with President Barack Obama’s goal of cutting carbon emissions from power plants. For Florida, the federal goal is a 38 percent cut in carbon by 2030. Read more
