A Navy veteran is defending her actions after she came under public condemnation for posting what she saw as a patriotic baby photo to Facebook.
Vanessa Hicks shared a professional photo she took of their baby cradled in the American flag.
But not everyone saw the patriotism in her actions, and the photo was quickly criticized by many on Facebook who ripped into the veteran for desecrating the flag. Some called the photo “disgusting.”
Hicks, who said she was overwhelmed by the flood of negative comments began to question her own patriotism.
“I know how I felt during those first few hours,” said Hicks. “[I felt] am I not a good American or veteran or wife?” she said.
Hicks said her husband, who is away on active duty in the Navy, would die for the flag and for the “freedoms that this country offers.”
Plenty of people noticed Hicks’ good intentions and rallied to her defense after the news of her controversial photo began to spread.
Hicks fought back too, and spent hours taking down the negative comments. Her Facebook page is now filled with support from those who see the picture as a symbol of love and freedom.
“Vanessa, may I have your permission to post your beautiful picture as my background pic on my Facebook page for a week?” wrote one supporter.
“Absolutely!” an exonerated Hicks replied.
“I have seen first-hand what desecration of the flag is,” Hicks said referring to her military service. “At the end of the day I didn’t do anything that disrespected the flag.” she told Good Morning America.
Hicks’ photography business is now booming thanks to all the publicity and she plans to donate 15 percent of all profits to the USO.
What say you? Did Hicks desecrate the flag by cradling her baby in it?
