Fox News host Greta Van Susteren took exception to the 47 Senate Republicans who sent an open letter to Iran, and askedĀ U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., the author of the letter, why become “pen pals” with Iran?
In the letter, the lawmakers stressedĀ toĀ the āleaders of the Islamic Republic of Iranā that any agreement on a nuclear program without legislative approval is a āmere executive agreement,ā which the next president can revoke āwith the stroke of a pen.ā
āWhy do you have to do it this way? I mean, why do you have to become pen pals essentially with the Iranian leadership you?ā Van Susteren asked.
She told Cotton he could have had the letter published in theĀ The New York TimesĀ orĀ Washington Post, adding that it “would have the same effect.” āBut, you know, here it does look like you are end-running the president.ā Van Susteren said.
“We made it an open letter so not only the Iranian leadership but the entire world knows where we stand,” he replied. Much like the other senators who signed the letter, among them U.S. Sens. Marco and Rubio and Rand Paul, the freshman senator was unapologetic for his actions. āNo regrets at all,” Cotton said.
“We are trying to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and Iran has to understand that the Congress will protect the American people from a bad deal as they have been doing for 200 years and as our Founding Fathers envisioned.ā
Cotton has been the most vocal defender of the letter this week. On Wednesday he got a little help from Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal as they tag-teamed Hillary Clinton on Twitter. Ā
GOP letter to Iranian clerics undermines American leadership. No one considering running for commander-in-chief should be signing on.
