In the wake of two police officers being ambushed overnight on the streets of Ferguson, Mo., Judge Andrew Napolitano said Attorney General Eric Holder “fueled the flames” in the besieged city.
One officer was shot in the face, another in the shoulder while monitoring a group of protesters across the street from the Ferguson Police Department. The officers were seriously injured, but both are expected to survive.
The discussion on Thursday’s “Fox and Friends,” centered on Holder’s reaction to a Justice Department report that cleared Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown, but claimed the Ferguson police department racially discriminated against black residents.
“We are prepared to use all the powers that we have, all the power that we have, to ensure that the situation changes there,” Holder said in a clip played on air — dismantling the department was included among the options.
“The political environment in which this happened, obviously, the flames were fanned by what we just heard Attorney General Eric Holder say,” Napolitano said.
Napolitano called out Holder for “naming names and revealing secret, private matters about the police department” in two “highly antagonistic” reports, contrasting that to a similar scenario in Newark, New Jersey, that occurred during the Bush administration.
Noting that a federal monitor was appointed to oversee changes in the police department in Newark, Napolitano said prudent changes were quietly made “with no grandstanding, like we just heard from the attorney general.”
“And now we see the results.”
