Age limit for little boys allowed in ladies room sign brings out claws in moms

A sign posted on a mall ladies room door prompted the question: When is it appropriate to send a boy into a public restroom by himself?

Post by Rio Grande Valley Moms Blog.

A Rio Grande Valley Mom’s Blog member took a photo of the sign, which read, “Please: Boys over 6 years of age use Men’s restroom,” and posted it on the group’s Facebook page.

They received hundred of replies, including these:

Linda Schebel: I just started letting my son go to the men’s room alone, and he is 12, but I stand outside. He knows all he has to do is yell, and I am busting in like The Incredible Hulk! He still doesn’t have any sexual interest in women. He’s too busy with his friends, who really aren’t very interested in girls, either. I don’t understand what the problem is. There’s a stall. No one can see you in there fouling up the bathroom, and not cleaning up after yourself!

Laura Smith: Oh hell no! My kid, my rules.

Theresa Andrea Olvera Garza Oh HELL NO!! If something happened To one of the boys they wouldn’t take responsibility . My son is 13yrs old and I stand right outside of the door and am not afraid to make a scene if he’s taking too long. A man got in my face saying it was inappropriate that I opened the door. I opened the door a little and asked my son if he was OK. Needless to say when the guy got in my face I got back right back into his and I’m only 4’10but I’ll be dammed if my son is not safe.

Laci Alfaro: I don’t let my son in the men’s restroom without his dad .. Plus it’s my child not theirs . The way the world is now I trust no one

Joanna Borrego: I don’t agree. If as mother’s we feel it’s unsafe or just not comfortable in sending our boys to the men’s room no one is going to force us to put them in danger..not even management. Ladies room sign should be changed to a female and children.

Michele Bettiga: I have no problem with a boy up to the age of 11 or so in the ladies’ restroom as long as he’s accompanied by a female relative. As a mom, you can’t be too cautious. There are a lot of pervs out there.

Most responses brought out the protective side of moms, and people in general, but there was also this, according to “Today”:

Others said a boy should be perfectly safe to go into the men’s room alone as long as a parent waited right outside the door.

Some commenters complained that boys who come into the ladies’ restroom sometimes aren’t adequately supervised.

“I have seen some pretty big (boys) over 6 years old in ladies room and they let their eyes roam and one actually crawled under the door to the (stall) on his back and eyes wide open ready to peek,” one woman wrote.

Many people said the debate is a perfect example of why each public place needs a family restroom.
