A Texas school district is catching criticism after it painted over an American flag-like mural on a school under contruction in a new development – because red, white and blue aren’t approved colors in the subdivision where the school is being built.
The Sylvestre and Carolina Reyes Elementary School in the Cimarron community of El Paso is scheduled to be finished July 30, according to local news reports.
It was named in honor of former U.S. Rep. Sylvestre Reyes, a Vietnam veteran, who asked the local school district to paint the national colors on the design of a flag that was embedded in one of the walls.
The Canutillo Independent School District was happy to comply, and went as far as painting a mock-up of the mural, according to CBS 4.
And that’s where the trouble started. One of the school’s neighbors complained that the colors of Old Glory didn’t fit the planned community’s color scheme for exterior walls – dark orange and tan in the school’s case.
Local veterans aren’t happy.
“We’re not talking about a mural that’s bright orange and pink and green with all kinds of weird signs, we’re talking about the American flag,” Jarred Taylor, chief marketing officer of Article 15 Clothing., told the station.
The company sells military-themed casual clothes.
“I have served 12 years on active duty before transferring to the reserves and I deployed twice, once to Mosul and once to Baghdad and have seen guy get carried away with that flag draped on their casket,” he said.
“So I mean when it comes down to it, I look at that as a symbol of not only brothers that I fought alongside of but the reason why we were out there fighting to begin with.”
But Hunt Communities, the developer of the subdivision, said the colors wouldn’t fly.
Besides violating the communities decoration scheme, Hunt wrote in a letter to the school district, the mural might have violated U.S. Flag Code by having incorrect proportions, and the incorrect number of stars and stripes.
According to the local NBC station, KTSM, Hunt is willing to look at a new mural, “if the school board submits a proposed design and gets confirmation of compliance from the US Department of Veteran Affairs, or similar agency.”
Fifty percent of the Cimarron residents would also have to approve the mural, KTSM reported.
