A Nevada couple who can’t foster children because they legally own firearms are asking state officials to change the law.
Brian and Valerie Wilson are urging lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow them to carry their weapons while serving as foster parents, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

“I am really heartbroken that the Department of Child and Family Services gave us this denial letter,” Valerie Wilson told the Assembly Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. “I really want a family.”
The couple’s attempts at taking in needy children have been hamstrung by regulations requiring that guns and ammunition be stored in separate, secure containers in any home where foster children reside.
Assembly Bill 167 would allow foster parents with concealed-carry permits to have loaded firearms on their bodies, in their vehicles or in their homes.
“I don’t know if some of my peers have toured Child Haven or have been in Child Haven, but we have children in need of great foster care, and we have had people that are law-abiding citizens that have gotten their background checks, that have their CCWs, literally denied to foster a child because they have a concealed-weapons permit,” Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, R-Las Vegas, said.
So far, there’s no sign that gay adoption supporters who insist “all children deserve a loving home” are rushing to help the Wilsons.
