With probable 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton getting rocked from all sides over her exclusive use of private email accounts as secretary of state, other potential candidates may be smelling blood in the water.
As the debate rages on about whether Clinton violated federal law by concealing documents by using a private server in her home, several names are being bantered about.
Topping the Drudge Report Friday is a story about Martin O’Malley, the former Democratic governor of Maryland and potential presidential candidate, making an appearance in the early primary state of New Hampshire.
And amid the early fall-out from “Email-gate,” The Weekly Standard reported Friday former Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore has announced an upcoming visit to the all-important caucus state of Iowa.
The purpose behind the trip involves training sessions on climate change, but when it comes to Gore’s presidential aspirations, never say never — especially if the Democratic Party suddenly finds itself pressed into coming up with a last-minute replacement for Clinton.
“Al Gore, like Hillary Clinton has spent most of his life in politics,” a Republican operative told the Weekly Standard. “Running for office is something that’s in his blood, and he probably thinks that the waters for a potential bid are getting a little, shall we say, warmer.”
Then there’s Rush Limbaugh, who suggested Thursday that the drive-by media may be turning on Clinton over the email scandal because they prefer U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
“They resent her being forced on them,” Limbaugh said on his radio show. “They resent the idea that the presidency is hers again, just like it was in 2008, just because. If she weren’t married to a guy named Bill Clinton, it is probably safe to say nobody would ever have heard of her.”
Warren has said she will not run for the White House in 2016, but there is a vocal minority in the party who see her as a true disciple of the progressive left’s redistributive social justice goals, and a better guardian than Clinton of President Obama’s legacy, once he’s out of office.
And they continue to press her into service with a “Draft Elizabeth Warren” campaign.
With the sharks circling in the water, and Clinton saying little about the email fiasco, the race for the White House just got a little more exciting for the Democratic Party. Only time will tell if Clinton shares the same survival instincts of husband Bill.
