An occasional teacher getting busted for tossing back cocktails while on the job isn’t a new phenomenon, but hopefully it’s not becoming a trend in Iowa, where for the second time in two months, a public school teacher has been arrested for public intoxication.
Carissa Bryant, 33, a sixth-grade teacher at Lenihan Intermediate School was arrested on Wednesday after district administrators were alerted that she may have been under the influence of alcohol.

As fate would have it, a deputy was visiting the school the same day to instruct a DARE class which teaches pupils about the dangers of substance abuse, according to the Times-Republican.
The kids got a real-life lesson, when the deputy noticed the smell of alcohol on Bryant and assisted in the administration of sobriety tests.
“The deputy detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, bloodshot and watery eyes and slurring her words,” said Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Hoffman.
Bryant was transferred to the Marshall County Jail where it was revealed that her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
Police weren’t able to determine if Bryant consumed the alcohol before arriving to work or if she had indulged on school grounds.
No alcohol was found on the school premises, and Bryant was later released on $300 bail.
This episode bares a few differences from a February incident when an Iowa Kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Lynn Rich, was arrested after empty beer cans were found in the classroom.
Rich may face stricter charges because she was arrested for public intoxication as well as child endangerment because of her student’s young age.
“A fairy significant distinction between the two events are the ages of the students involved,” Hoffman said.
The sixth-graders are better equipped to take care of themselves and their ages could work in favor for Bryant as she awaits her punishment.
Bryant is on administrative leave pending further investigation, reported the Republican.
